Saving Santa
By Jacob

The alert came over the radio. "Emergency! Santa Claus trapped in chimney. Christmas will likely be cancelled". As soon as I heard it I knew I would have to do something and do it fast. I quickly gathered my gear and headed out the door...

Santa was stuck in MY chimney. I was getting my equipment from the shed when I hear a sound. "Help! Help! I'm stuck up your chimney." I ran out the door and I saw Santa. Santa was stuck in MY chimney. He was hurt. I got the crane and Santa fell. He landed on my bouncy castle. Santa went inside. I gave him a beer and cookies. He said, "Can you get more cookies?" I said, "OK". Suddenly we heard a noise outside. "Give me Santa!" growled a scary voice. "No," I shouted. Something smashed the roof to get to Santa. It was the Freeze! Santa gave the Freeze a present. Freeze opened the present and said, "I always wanted a Teddy Bear". He smiled and Christmas was saved.

Awesome Orana Park
By Room 19
6.10.11

Finally our Big Day Out has arrived. Room 19 was a cauldron of bubbling bursting excitement as we waited for the bus at 9.00am on Wednesday the 5th of October.

The bus trip was noisy and everyone was eagerly anticipating the big bump. There were squeals, screams and pandemonium as we went up, over and swooped down the other side.

At the park we scuttled to the gate like a centipede and met Toby, Carol and Bethany. Toby told us what we needed to do to keep us and the animals safe. We strode to the Zoo School where we discussed what we were going to do. We also talked about the roles and responsibilities of the staff at Orana Park. Toby said they were a community.

After morning tea we left to explore the animal communities. The first animal we learnt about was the Spider Monkey. We found out that the Spider Monkey community is lead by the Alpha Male. He is at the top of the ladder. The second community was the Ruffled Lemurs where the leader is the Alpha Female. Next we saw the lions, giraffes and gibbons. An interesting fact we learnt was that although they only weigh about 12 kilograms, a gibbon is as strong as 8 All Blacks put together. After that we observed the meerkats. An important role in their community is sentry duty. We all adored the meerkats. Finally we crept as quietly as mice into the kiwi house. The kiwi was running back and forth. It was really dark and we had to wait for our eyes to adjust so we could see properly.

At last it was time for lunch. A magnificent peacock came to watch us eat. Then we got to have free time with our group. Some people went to see the tigers, some played on the playground and some went to the farm yard area.

We felt sad when it was time to leave. There were so many other things we still wanted to see. We highly recommend Orana Park as a great day out.

What a Group of Bees!
by Julius
27.9.11

The bees zoomed across the countryside, the wasps gaining on them. One by one bees were injured by the wasps. At last they reached a tree. It wasn't just any tree. Inside this tree was a secret entrance. This was the bees hideout. The bees dashed down to the tree and went in and up to their hidden hive, the wasps left behind on the countryside. The wasps had found the tree but did not know that it had a secret entrance so they flew away confused. Meanwhile the bess went past two guards who said "Good day to you mam!" Then they reached the Queen Bee. Beside the Queen was a honey crystal. This was the reason why the wasps wanted to destroy the bees. "What did I tell you to do?" the Queen shouted at the worker bees. "To-o-o ..." "TO GET THE NECTAR from the flowers you fools!" spat the Queen. "But what did you do? You got the wasps to chase us. Now they're going to steal the honey crystal and we're going to die!" The echo came back to the wasps. They heard the echo and rushed back to the tree. Searching carefully they found the secret entrance. They infiltrated the hive. The real battle began. All the bees got stung except for one drone bee and the Queen. All the wasps got killed except for one drone wasp and the Queen. The Queens were locked in a battle. Bee against wasp. ZAP! The Queen wasp died with a hissing hail. The bee drone stung the wasp drone. They both died. The Queen bee moved slowly to the cells and laid her eggs. The hive would live on.

Sid's Big Trip

 6.5.11

One day Sid out class mascot left because he was getting bored in the holiday alone. So he left a message on the board and set off or his exciting travels. When we came back there was a postcard and the message he wrote earlier that morning. We were a little bit sad to see him go. Our class received a postcatd just about every day! Room 19 are happy for him but when they saw how far he went round NZ Room 19 got a bit worried. We wondered where he would go next, and who had been helping him? Sid had travelled round Kaikoura and Wellington and the Abel Tasman Park and Hanmer. He must have caught some type of transport as well. He could have gone on a ferry, car or remote control car! Hopefully Sid will come back soon. We are really missing him!

Today we got a post card from Sid from Purakaunui Falls. Julius said "I thought he was going to come back here to us". Riley thinks that Sid seems to have been gone for a year. Kennedy thinks he will be coming back soon. Maybe if he reads our Blog he will see how much we miss him and come home. Maiya wonders if he will stop in at Queenstown and then come back to Christchurch.
